What is 510 thread?
510 thread is the de facto standard screw fitting between a vape cartridge and its battery, named for its ten threads of 0.5 mm pitch.

A standard almost nobody owns, which is why the cartridge and the battery in one package often come from different companies.

Why it matters
Because it is a standard rather than a proprietary fitting, a cartridge and a battery on the same shelf frequently come from different factories, which is why hardware and brand have to be traced separately.
What the standard is, and what it is not
510 is a thread form, not a specification and not a certification. The name describes the geometry, ten threads at a 0.5 mm pitch, and that is the whole of it. Nothing about voltage, airflow, coil material, oil compatibility or safety is implied by a cartridge being 510, and there is no body that tests or certifies a part as compliant.
It became the default the way most connectors do: it was adopted widely enough early enough that departing from it cost more than conforming. The result is a connector that is effectively universal and belongs to no one.
Why that makes tracing harder, and how the records answer it
An open fitting means an open supply chain. A cartridge from one factory and a battery from another can be packed, branded and sold together with no commercial relationship between the two manufacturers at all. A brand can change cartridge suppliers between production runs without changing anything a buyer would notice, because the interface is the same.
So hardware and brand have to be traced as separate chains that happen to meet. On the hardware side, what is actually identifying is the parts a factory does own or build distinctively, the coil, the housing, the airflow design, rather than the thread. The factory profiles carry product lines, coil technology and capacity for that reason, and the share of traced volume the ten largest factories account for is reported over the factories with an exporter link on file rather than over all of them.
It is also why coverage is published as a number instead of assumed. The share of chains traced end to end is the honest measure of how often both sides of a device can be resolved, and the gap is not a rounding error, it is the structural consequence of a connector that lets two unrelated factories ship into one box.
Questions people ask
- Does 510 thread mean a cartridge is safe or tested?
- No. 510 describes a screw fitting, ten threads at a 0.5 mm pitch, and nothing else. No body certifies a part as 510-compliant, and the term implies nothing about materials, voltage or testing.
- If the battery and the cartridge fit, are they from the same maker?
- Usually not. Because the fitting is a de facto standard rather than a proprietary one, a cartridge and a battery sold together frequently come from different factories with no relationship between them.
